So you’re looking for a dinner and a show? The stars come out at night in the Islands, and we don’t just mean the celestial kind. Some of Hawaii’s most popular and talented performers delight audiences every night in the Aloha State.
The hot spot for dinner shows, as you might expect, is Waikiki. This bustling resort area on Oahu features music, magic and mystery—everything from big production numbers to "Tiny Bubbles."
For high-energy performances loaded with music, fun and laughs, few dinner shows can rival the one put on by the Society of Seven. This high-spirited group has headlined the Outrigger Waikiki’s Main Showroom for more than 30 years. Hilarious skits, celebrity impressions and stellar song performances are all part of the S.O.S. show, which was named "Best Show in Waikiki" by Honolulu Magazine.
For a night of pure magic, head to the Waikiki Beachcomber and catch Magic of Polynesia, a mesmerizing show starring illusionist John Hirokawa. The show includes moving hula performances and chants—all built around Hirokawa’s world-class illusions. A former protégé of David Copperfield, Hirokawa is famous for his amazing vanishing (and reappearing) stunts as well as his thrilling escape artist routines. In 2004, Hirokawa received the prestigious International Magicians Society Merlin Award for having the "Most Original" magic show.
And yes, Don Ho still reigns in Hawaii. The legendary entertainer performs regularly at the Waikiki Beachcomber, singing familiar favorites like "Tiny Bubbles," "I’ll Remember You," "The Hawaiian Wedding Song" and "Pearly Shells." On occasion, Ho’s daughter, Hoku, a rising recording star in her own right, drops in to sing with her proud father.
Perhaps the hottest show on Hawaii’s current entertainment menu is found not on Oahu, but the island of Maui. Ulalena at the Maui Myth & Magic Theatre in Lahainais an epic musical that creatively explores the cultures, traditions and mythical history of the Hawaiian islands. Similar to Cirque du Soleil in its presentation, Ulalena is an enchanting blend of music, dance, costumes and lighting.
There are more entertainment options, from the spectacular revue at the Polynesian Cultural Center to the many luaus that operate throughout the Islands. Just sit back, savor your dinner and enjoy the show!
