This is a lovely golden-sand beach on Oahu’s easternmost point is about 1,000 feet long and is backed by black Koolau cliffs, Makapuu has a classic natural Hawaiian beauty that has been displayed in such shows as Hawaii Five-O and Magnum, P.I. However, swimming is only recommended when the water is very calm. Offshore of Makapuu is a scenic islet called Kaohikaipu, and behind it a larger islet called Mafamnana, more commonly known as Rabbit Island because of the many rabbits that live there along with native Hawaiian seabirds. Also check out the nice lookout directly above the beach.
Beach walking, sunbathing. Swimming and bodysurfing should only be done when the water is very calm (usually during summer), and only if you are an experienced swimmer.
Watching the experienced bodyboarders navigate the pounding near shore waves is quite exciting, but don’t try this yourself unless you are extremely experienced.
Need to Know
The seafloor of Makapuu Beach drops off sharply creating a strong shore break. These nearshore waves along with potentially dangerous off-shore currents make Makapuu a beach for experienced swimmers only. Just because you see locals bodyboarding at Makapuu doesn’t mean it is safe. The strength of the waves breaking on the shore should not be underestimated. No surfing is allowed at Makapuu Beach.
Restrooms, showers, picnic areas, phones.
