Tunnels Beach

Tunnels beach on Kauai is great for snorkeling & surfing

Tunnels Beach
One of Kauaiā€™s Very Best Snorkeling Spots

Tunnels Beach is ringed by a coral reef abundant with marine life as well as lots of caves and lava formations that make for exciting explorations. The beach spans for about two miles from Haena Beach Park on the west all the way to the Hanalei Colony Resort on the east. The shallow nearshore waters with sandy areas make Tunnels great for swimming as well as snorkeling, and the experience is made even more magical by the verdant green mountains. A surfing spot on the outer reef is for those who are experienced only and during windy days the kitesurfers and windsurfers ride the waves. The beach is lined with palms and ironwood trees that provide plenty of shady places for relaxing.

Highlights

This scenic white sand beach is great for watching sunsets. The inner reef is ideal for beginning snorkelers and scuba divers while the outer reef is explored by those who have more experience. The outer reef has interesting coral formations as well as lava tubes and arches.

Need to Know

Snorkeling and scuba diving at Tunnels are typically great during the summer months, however during the winter months and potentially at any time of year, the ocean is subject to large waves that bring strong surges and currents making entering the water hazardous. Never go in the ocean during times of high surf or rough seas, and always stay close to shore.
